Upon joining a local Young Marine unit, youth undergo a 40-hour orientation program. Meetings are hosted on Saturday, every week, for 7 weeks. This orientation is called Recruit Training. . The youth learn general subjects such as history, customs and courtesies, close order drill, physical fitness, and military rank structure, land navigation, public speaking, and more. At the end of recruit training, we hold a weekend-long campout for the recruits to apply the skills they learned during recruit training and celebrate with a graduation and awards ceremony.

After graduating from Young Marine Recruit Training, the youth have the opportunity to learn even more new skills, earn rank, wear the Young Marine uniform, and work toward earning ribbons and other awards.

Young Marines

Our History In 1959 in Waterbury, Connecticut, several former Marines formed an organization for boys that would mirror the values of the Marine Corps. Their vision – to offer leadership training and other life skills – formed the bedrock of the organization known today as the Young Marines. Years later, the program is a highly respected youth organization, for boys and girls ages eight through high school graduation, that has grown to over 236 units. Our focus, though, has remained the same: to strengthen the lives of America’s youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a health, drug-free lifestyle. The core values - leadership, teamwork, and discipline - are well understood and practiced by all.

Since the Young Marines’ humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to over 236 units with over 5,000 youth and over 1,950 adult volunteers in 40 states, the District of Columbia, Okinawa, Japan, and affiliates in other countries.

Our Motto The Young Marines strengthens the lives of America’s youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building and leadership and promotes a lifestyle that is conducive to being productive members of society.
