**What is FAYS?**

The Family And Youth Success (FAYS) Program offers free, preventative short-term services for youth and their families. In addition to assisting youth and their families in mastering new skills through skills-based training, our staff helps to improve attendance in school, to reduce the occurrence of running away, lessen family conflict, and cut delinquent behavior. Our main goal is to keep families together by strengthening and stabilizing family unity. FAYS also offers Universal Child Abuse Prevention information and workshops.

**¿Qué es FAYS?**

El Programa de Éxito Familiar y Juvenil (FAYS) ofrece servicios gratuitos de prevención a corto plazo para jóvenes y sus familias. Además de ayudar a los jóvenes y sus familias a dominar nuevas habilidades mediante capacitación basada en habilidades, nuestro personal ayuda a mejorar la asistencia a la escuela, a reducir la incidencia de fugas de la familia, a disminuir los conflictos familiares y a reducir la conducta delictiva. Nuestro objetivo principal es mantener unidas a las familias fortaleciendo y estabilizando la unidad familiar. FAYS también ofrece información y talleres sobre prevención universal del abuso infantil.

At Community Healthcore, we provide a place for recovery, resilience, and help empower individuals to reach their life goals.

We offer mental, emotional, and behavioral health services to East Texas residents.

By promoting dignity, our programs enable adults to live more independent and productive lives, children to be more resilient, and families to be healthier.

Through multiple East Texas locations, we have clinicians serving communities in 23 counties. They provide treatment, prevention, and outreach services to more than 16,000 children, families, and adults each year. Our various outreach locations also give us the ability to collaborate with community partners and school districts all across East Texas.

Community Healthcore is proudly certified as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) as we provide a comprehensive collection of services needed to create access, stabilize people in crisis, and provide the necessary treatment for those with the most serious, complex mental illnesses and substance use disorders in our communities.

As a Joint Commission Accredited Behavioral Health Care organization, we are committed to providing safe, high quality care, treatment, and services to everyone we serve.

At the core of our mission is the idea that love can change a family for generations. This is something that we have seen time and time again in the over 2,000 children who have come through our doors since we were founded as a mission of the North District of the United Methodist Church in 1969.

The families we serve are persevering through financial struggles and must be working, in job training, or in school. Our income-based weekly tuition helps families “get on the other side” of their circumstances. Working families, college students, single parents, grandparents raising grandchildren, Spanish-speaking families, and foster families all come together at The House That Love Built.

Currently, 25 percent of children in Longview are living in poverty, and the average cost of two children in preschool greatly exceeds the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment. The need remains great for us to provide affordable tuition as we strive to break the cycle of generational poverty.

The East Texas Aging & Disability Resource Center (ETxADRC) first began as a grant opportunity through the Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services (DADS), in 2008, now Texas Health and Human Services (THHS). Community Healthcore is the fiscal agent with support from:

We are a 501c3 nonprofit located in Longview, Tx. We address the literacy needs of the 34% of adults in Gregg County who are functionally illiterate and the increasing population of adults who are learning English as a second language (ESL). Improved literacy skills lead to better jobs and better lives for parents and their children.

**Our History**
The East Texas Literacy Council (ETLC), located in Longview, Texas and serving Gregg County, was established in 1987 as a community-based 501c 3 nonprofit organization. Early Literacy Council work was done by volunteer tutors and two staff members serving 60 clients.

In 1994, ETLC opened the Learning Center with computer learning stations.  In 1999, ETLC began ESL instruction to meet the needs of the growing area immigrant population.

In 2001, ETLC began providing workplace readiness instruction and workplace literacy programs to meet the increased literacy needs in the workplace.

Adult literacy can change everything. Health. Gender equality. Poverty. Every important social issue is impacted by low literacy. When individuals learn how to read, write, do basic math, and use computers, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty, lower health care costs, find and keep sustainable employment, and ultimately change their lives. 

**Family Literacy**
Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves.1 

**Poverty**
Of adults with the lowest literacy levels, 43 percent live in poverty, and 70% of adult welfare recipients have low literacy levels.2

**Health Literacy **
An excess of $230 billion a year in health care costs is linked to low adult literacy.3

**Unemployment/Workforce**
Low literacy costs the U.S. at least $225 billion each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment.4 

**Education**
Every year, one in six young adults—more than 1.2 million—drop out of high school.5 

ELL (English Language Learners)
About 50 percent of the 2 million immigrants that come to the U.S. each year lack high school education and proficient English language skills.6

**Corrections**
Research shows that inmates who are educated are 43 percent less likely to return to prison.7

We assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit and coordinating for sound regional development. Either directly, or through our contractors, ETCOG provides programs and services for East Texas seniors, employers and job seekers. We also build the 9-1-1 emergency call delivery system, provide peace officer training and homeland security planning services; and deliver rural transportation services, business finance programs, grant writing services and environmental grant funding for the region.

Heartisans Marketplace is a nonprofit that helps women break the chains of dependency and achieve self-sufficiency! We are changing lives, one woman at a time. Looking within our community, we discovered a lack of resources that provided underserved women with opportunities to access higher paying jobs and education which would move them toward self-sufficiency. **Our Story**
In the Fall of 2012, the Women's Ministry of First Baptist Church-Longview conducted an interest survey. The top category of interest was arts and crafts. Our first thought was, “What in the world can we do with arts and crafts?” Julee Rachels, CEO and Founder of Heartisans, and a friend discussed how that might look as an outreach opportunity for the women of FBC-L. They reached out to another friend and the name Heartisans was born from three words: He, Heart, Artisans. "He": we wanted whatever we did to be Christ-centered; "Heart": because of our love for Christ, our activity would come from the heart; and "Artisans": the products made would be high quality. 

In the Summer of 2013, Julee volunteered with Buckner Ministries and FBC-L at the Bellaire Apartments, a low-income apartment complex in the Longview Community. She worked with 20-22 ladies each week teaching healthy cooking, exercise, and Bible study. During this time, several of the ladies expressed a desire to move out of Bellaire. Many lived there in the cycle of generational poverty and did not know how to transition out. Julee knew opportunities for them were in education and employment; so, she began praying about how Heartisans could serve as a vehicle for these women to move out of Bellaire and poverty.

In the Fall of 2013, 14 of the women who had been in the Summer group participated in the Heartisans’ pilot program. The participants met once a week at the Buckner facility where they learned business principles through producing arts and crafts items. The women would choose an item, calculate the cost of materials, make note of the time required to craft the item (labor cost), price the item, and then market the items. At the end of the pilot program, each woman received a percentage of the profits generated from the sale of the products they had made. This provided them with Christmas money to spend on their families.

Although the women enjoyed the program and were proud of the money they had earned, Julee realized this model would not provide the women a way out of Bellaire, much less poverty.

In the Spring of 2014, Julee began the paperwork for Heartisans to be designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. She invited two friends to join her with the startup as founding board members, and she was thankful they did!

When she visited her daughter in Nashville that March, she took Julee to Thistle Farms, a nonprofit organization that rescues women off the streets and out of the sex-trafficking trade, providing them with shelter for two years while they got their GED, counseling, and work experience. This was a lightbulb moment for Julee.

She returned to Thistle Farms for training in April 2014 where she learned how to implement what was needed in the Longview community. The Longview community had several nonprofits that provided homeless women coming out of domestic violence and drug addiction with a safe living environment. Another nonprofit, Buckner Pathways, was being built that would provide single mothers a place to live while attending college. What our community lacked was a vehicle to the higher paying jobs, moving women toward self-sufficiency.

Julee knew she wanted Heartisans to accomplish five things:
Provide women in the Longview community with quality job training that would give them the best opportunity to apply and enter a career they were naturally drawn to by God-given interests and abilities, a job that would afford them the ability to provide for themselves and their families, and access to higher education to continue moving up in that career.
Provide hands-on work and essential skills training enabling program participants to be work-ready when exiting the program.
Provide an opportunity for a valuable network of people in our community to meet the specific social, physical, and spiritual needs that relationships afford (mentors/tutors).
Provide a place for the community to “Serve in Love” with their gifts and talents.
Incorporate the gifts and talents of the community volunteers as a vehicle to finance the program (manufacturing studios staffed by community volunteers with the products sold in a retail store environment).
In November of 2014, the retail store of Heartisans Marketplace opened and operated November and December. Funds generated from the sale of products from the studios and community donations provided funds to begin accepting women into the job training program in January 2015. That January, partnering with Longview Economic Development Corporation (LEDCO), Heartisans became the ACT WorkKeys Career Ready site in Gregg County providing program participants with certificates in ten key essential skills for the workplace plus a National Career Readiness Certificate upon completion of the program. 

Women are referred into the Heartisans’ job readiness program from other local 501(c)(3) nonprofits, churches, families, the court system, and the community at large. Heartisans offers a holistic approach to being job ready. While in our program, legal, medical, dental, and vision challenges are addressed, along with spiritual, emotional and physical needs through volunteers and community partners. The Heartisans program provides job skills to re-enter the workforce as well as life skills and mentoring so that women can provide for their families' needs and be contributing members of our community. 

Through the process, we discover each woman's God-given talents and interests and, as a result, there are women laying roads in our community, caring for the sick, providing services in company offices, and serving healthy meals to children in our school system, along with various other career fields. We continue to support many of our graduates as they hold down a job and provide for their families while attending higher education. All of these women fill vital roles in our community making life better for their families and our community.

We began with two women and helped six women achieve success in the first year. Now, almost nine years later, we are able to support up to ten women per session (8 to 10 weeks). To date, we have had 132 women complete the Heartisans’ job readiness program. Over 90% of these women have entered the workforce in our community with many continuing their education through Kilgore College or trade certifications, each moving towards independence.

FUTURE PLANS:

We have been in our new location two years, which has enabled us to expand our program area, retail store and manufacturing studios, along with acreage needed to build the Heartisans Village, a cottage community of independent homes. As we continue serving women in our local community, our greatest need is to provide safe, affordable housing in a supportive community and continued mentoring for one to two years as our graduates transition into their new life and put into practice what they have learned. Heartisans Village will have two three-bed/one-bath cottages, six two-bed/one-bath cottages, a one-bed/one-bath cottage for our resident assistant, a laundry cottage, playground, community garden, gathering areas and an alumni center.
