Local CIS affiliates bring our unique model to schools in their community by positioning site coordinators inside schools and partnering with local businesses, social service agencies, health care providers, and volunteers to provide students with exactly what they need. Whether it’s food, school supplies, health care, counseling, academic assistance or simply a positive role model, CIS is there to help. **HISTORY**
Communities in Schools national was established in 1977 (then called Cities in Schools). Today Communities in Schools is the nation’s leading community-based organization in dropout prevention. There are currently 25 states with Communities in Schools Programs. Texas is the largest program in the national Communities in Schools network.

The first Texas Communities in Schools program was established in 1979 in Houston.

Communities in Schools of East Texas, Inc.(a non-profit 501© 3) was founded in 1995 with the Deep East Texas program added in 1999.


**ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE**

**National Level:** Communities In Schools, Inc., (National Office) requires each state to follow an organizational structure that has proven to ensure successful state and local programs. The National Communities In Schools office has a board of directors. The National Office enters into written agreements with each state.

**State Level-** Legislative: Communities In Schools of Texas State Advisory Committee (CISSAC) was established by the legislature with nine members appointed by the Governor, Lt. Governor and Speaker of the House. The committee advises and provides guidance to the CIS State Office.

**State Level-** State Office: Communities In Schools of Texas, State Office is administered by the Texas Education Agency. The role of the State Office is to administer the Communities in Schools programs statewide according to legislation, program model, and National Communities in Schools Office requirements.

**Local Level:** 501c(3) Board of Directors: Each local Communities in Schools program must have a local Board of Directors. This board administers the Communities In Schools program at local levels through contracts with the state.

**School District and Campus Level:** Local Communities In Schools programs partner with school districts through written agreements to provide services to selected schools.

LeTourneau University is named for its founders, R.G. and Evelyn LeTourneau. R.G. LeTourneau was one of the world's greatest inventors of earthmoving equipment. A businessman and devout Christian, LeTourneau toured Longview, Texas, with his wife, Evelyn, in 1946 to consider a manufacturing site for his next earthmoving equipment factory. While flying over a sprawling complex of a vacated Army hospital consisting of over 200 frame buildings, Mrs. LeTourneau inquired about the facility. When told it was no longer in use, she suggested establishing a school to educate returning World War II veterans.

The site became LeTourneau Technical Institute, founded in 1946 with only male students. In 1961 the school became LeTourneau College, a co-educational four-year school. In 1989 LeTourneau College became LeTourneau University, a SACSCOC-accredited, nondenominational Christian university, offering four-year and two-year degree programs in engineering, technology, the liberal arts, business, aeronautical science, education, and the sciences, plus master's degree programs in business and education.

In that same year, the university began expanding into offering programs for working adults in evening and weekend classes. Calling it the LEAP program, which stood for LeTourneau Education for Adult Professionals, classes with the same students making a group, or cohort, met weekly for six to eight weeks per course. Cohorts were kept on track through to degree completion with students automatically enrolled in each next class, and as each class finished, the next course began in the same location the following week with a different professor. Many other universities have adopted this format to reach working adults. Today, nearly a third of LeTourneau students attend classes online, and might not step foot onto the university's beautiful main campus in Longview, Texas unless they come for graduation.

The Martin House Children's Advocacy Center is a nonprofit organization (501c3) that provides resources and services to childrens who have been victims of any kind of abuse. By supporting The Martin House you are helping provide forensic interviews, referral services, and advocacy support to children affected by abuse and their non-offending caregivers. The Martin House provides various preventative education opportunities free of charge. It is one of 70 CACs in Texas and more than 800 across the U.S. dedicated to protecting our most vulnerable citizens: our children.

The children’s advocacy center model originated in 1983 by then-District Attorney Bud Cramer in Huntsville, Alabama. Recognizing that child victims were being re-victimized by the very system that was supposed to protect them, Cramer led a group of front line workers from CPS and law enforcement agencies, nurses, mental health providers, and others to establish the first Children's Advocacy Center in 1985. Today, the Huntsville center is the National Children's Advocacy Center and serves as a model and resource for advocacy centers across the country. Bud Cramer went on to serve as a US Congressman where he continued to fight for children until his retirement in 2008.

Amarillo is the proud home of the first CAC in Texas when The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center opened its doors in 1990. Since then, communities all across the state have established multidisciplinary teams to investigate, prosecute, and provide intervention for abuse victims and their non-offending family members.

In 1998, leaders in both Gregg and Harrison counties began educating their communities regarding the need for a children’s advocacy center. East Texas CASA contacted Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas, the membership association for CACs in Texas, and the process of starting a CAC in our community began.

The Children’s Advocacy Center of East Texas (CACET) was established in a little gray house on College Street in Longview and children received forensic interviews beginning in June 2000. At the time, the CAC had one employee, a Program Director, who quickly hired a Child Advocate to help ensure the children and their families received services so vital to their healing process. CACET began to coordinate the efforts of the professional teams who investigate, prosecute, and facilitate healing in both counties. The teams included representatives from area law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, Child Protective Services, and local medical and mental health professionals.

In 2002 East Texas CASA changed their organizational name to East Texas Child Advocates (ETCA) with three programs under their umbrella: East Texas CASA, CAC of East Texas, and Getting Together Safely. Because of the desire of the board to have all three programs under one roof, the programs moved to a larger location on South High Street in 2006.

In the summer of 2008 the ETCA board voted to separate CAC of East Texas from the umbrella organization. A committee was formed to begin the process of the legal separation. In the summer of 2009 a new board of directors was formed and The Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center of Gregg and Harrison Counties was established and moved to 606 West Garfield Drive in Longview.

In 2014 the board of directors voted to add Marion County to its official service area and changed the name of the organization to The Martin House Children's Advocacy Center. To better support the multidisciplinary teams and families from Harrison and Marion Counties, a CAC satellite office was established in the Carlile Building in Marshall in September 2015.

The Martin House Children's Advocacy Center is the result of a remarkable collaboration and coalition of dedicated individuals and agencies which serves more than 600 children and their families each year. This partnership, combined with a generous outpouring of community support, has made the center a reality and children a priority. The center is one of 70 CACs in Texas and more than 800 across the U.S. dedicated to protecting our most vulnerable citizens: our children.

Buckner offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Longview area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their potential. **This profile highlights our Buckner Family Pathways program.** Buckner Family Pathways™ is designed to help single parents in crisis who need to care for their children and determine next steps for their family’s future.  Single-parent programs help single parents  overcome barriers that prevent self-sufficiency, such as education, career prospects and life skills. These barriers ultimately affect the potential for children to succeed at school and later in their adult lives.

Family Pathways is a short-term residential program with most residents staying for an average of 36 months, depending on length and requirement of degree plan.

Mackenzie and Taylor have been in foster care for six years and are anxiously awaiting a forever family to adopt them. Doris and Peter are empy-nesters, looking for a life of community and meaning as they live out their retirement years.

Buckner offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Longview area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their God-given potential.

When you volunteer with Buckner in Longview, you will meet people like Lacy, Mackenzie, Taylor, Doris and Peter. You will minister to them and pray with them. Their stories will leave an eternal impact on your soul. The Buckner ministry is unlike any other.

In Longview, we provide:

**Foster care and adoption**

Buckner provides the training and resources needed to become a family to a child for a season through foster care or a forever family through domestic foster care or adoption. Children in these programs are most often referred through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services due to experiencing abuse, neglect or abandonment. We also respond to mothers experiencing an unplanned pregnancy with counseling and support. Learn more by calling 903-757-9383.

**Buckner Family Hope Center® in Longview**

The Family Hope Center programs offer child-centered, family-focused places where families go to find hope, support and empowerment in their community to reach their fullest God-given potential. The key to the succes of the Family Hope Center is found in combining effective programs and passionate people to help families that are experiencing poverty, family issues and lack of services.

Our programs seek to engage through family assistance and community events; equip families through education, financial empowerment, child and youth development and spiritual development; elevate families through family coaching, counseling and spiritual enrichment.

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, God uses our station as the Christian music station of East Texas. We are a station, non-commercial, operated by a non-profit corporation. Fuzión is structured to serve our listeners with the best Christian music, information and entertainment. Our prayer is that God can minister to you through our ministry.
