The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them,and they were left to care for themselves.
 
In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. 

Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans.

Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010.

Annually, the nearly 2 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. 

From providing over $3 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year, to encouraging elevation of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there.

We focus on providing free or reduced medical wigs to veterans and low-income families who suffer hair loss and whose insurance doesn’t cover all their expenses due to their medical diagnosis from alopecia and cancer.

We specialize in providing free consultations on providing reduced or free Medical Cranial Prosthetic Wigs based on, but not limited to, your medical diagnosis and financial qualifications.

**Our History**
The East Texas Literacy Council (ETLC), located in Longview, Texas and serving Gregg County, was established in 1987 as a community-based 501c 3 nonprofit organization. Early Literacy Council work was done by volunteer tutors and two staff members serving 60 clients.

In 1994, ETLC opened the Learning Center with computer learning stations.  In 1999, ETLC began ESL instruction to meet the needs of the growing area immigrant population.

In 2001, ETLC began providing workplace readiness instruction and workplace literacy programs to meet the increased literacy needs in the workplace. 

Today, through community support and grants, the ETLC has been able to increase its capacity to serve adult learners with pre-GED and GED instruction.

Adult literacy can change everything. Health. Gender equality. Poverty. Every important social issue is impacted by low literacy. When individuals learn how to read, write, do basic math, and use computers, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty, lower health care costs, find and keep sustainable employment, and ultimately change their lives. 

**Family Literacy**
Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves.1 

**Poverty**
Of adults with the lowest literacy levels, 43 percent live in poverty, and 70% of adult welfare recipients have low literacy levels.2

**Health Literacy **
An excess of $230 billion a year in health care costs is linked to low adult literacy.3

**Unemployment/Workforce**
Low literacy costs the U.S. at least $225 billion each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment.4 

**Education**
Every year, one in six young adults—more than 1.2 million—drop out of high school.5 

ELL (English Language Learners)
About 50 percent of the 2 million immigrants that come to the U.S. each year lack high school education and proficient English language skills.6

**Corrections**
Research shows that inmates who are educated are 43 percent less likely to return to prison.7 

Low literacy is a global crisis that affects all of us.

That’s why it’s so important to understand the issues and confront the facts head on. Only then can we can stand together to fight for change.

**Our History**
In 1959 in Waterbury, Connecticut, several former Marines formed an organization for boys that would mirror the values of the Marine Corps. Their vision – to offer leadership training and other life skills – formed the bedrock of the organization known today as the Young Marines. Years later, the program is a highly respected youth organization, for boys and girls ages eight through high school graduation, that has grown to over 236 units. Our focus, though, has remained the same: to strengthen the lives of America’s youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a health, drug-free lifestyle. The core values - leadership, teamwork, and discipline - are well understood and practiced by all.

Since the Young Marines’ humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to over 236 units with over 5,000 youth and over 1,950 adult volunteers in 40 states, the District of Columbia, Okinawa, Japan, and affiliates in other countries.

The Young Marines strengthens the lives of America’s youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. Buckner offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Longview area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their potential. **This profile highlights our Buckner Family Pathways program.** Buckner Family Pathways™ is designed to help single parents in crisis who need to care for their children and determine next steps for their family’s future.  Single-parent programs help single parents  overcome barriers that prevent self-sufficiency, such as education, career prospects and life skills. Lacy is a single 25-year-old facing an unplanned pregnancy, unsure if she can parent her child. Mackenzie and Taylor have been in foster care for six years and are anxiously awaiting a forever family to adopt them. Doris and Peter are empy-nesters, looking for a life of community and meaning as they live out their retirement years.

Buckner offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Longview area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their God-given potential.

When you volunteer with Buckner in Longview, you will meet people like Lacy, Mackenzie, Taylor, Doris and Peter. You will minister to them and pray with them. Their stories will leave an eternal impact on your soul. The Buckner ministry is unlike any other.

In Longview, we provide:

**Foster care and adoption**

Buckner provides the training and resources needed to become a family to a child for a season through foster care or a forever family through domestic foster care or adoption. Children in these programs are most often referred through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services due to experiencing abuse, neglect or abandonment. We also respond to mothers experiencing an unplanned pregnancy with counseling and support. Learn more by calling 903-757-9383.

**Buckner Family Hope Center® in Longview**

The Family Hope Center programs offer child-centered, family-focused places where families go to find hope, support and empowerment in their community to reach their fullest God-given potential. The key to the succes of the Family Hope Center is found in combining effective programs and passionate people to help families that are experiencing poverty, family issues and lack of services.

Our programs seek to engage through family assistance and community events; equip families through education, financial empowerment, child and youth development and spiritual development; elevate families through family coaching, counseling and spiritual enrichment.

Northeast Texas Habitat for Humanity partners with low-income families who are living in inadequate, unsafe, unaffordable and/or overcrowded housing to build simple, safe, and decent homes. The community provides volunteerism and donations in the form of construction labor, professional services, money, and materials to construct homes in a cost-efficient manner.

Buckner Children & Family Services in Longview, Tx is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Buckner offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Longview area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their potential. **This profile highlights our BUCKNER HOPES program.** The Buckner HOPES program is an in-home parenting education, developmental assessments, resources and referrals, and family well-being support.

Our goals include:
- Encouraging positive parent-child interactions
- Teaching parents about early childhood development
- Increasing children’s school readiness and success
- Offering health and development screenings
- Providing a network of support and encouragement for families.

**Parenting is hard even without extra life stressors.** But when a family is going through challenges, it's OK to ask for help. Buckner International offers Healthy Outcomes through Prevention and Early Support (HOPES) to families. Parents who are expecting a baby or have a child up to age 5 can benefit from free assistance through Buckner HOPES. Some of the advantages of services include:

- Access to a parent educator that specializes in early childhood
- One-on-one sessions to discuss your specific family challenges
- A customized plan to help parents and child(ren) to be successful
- Child developmental assessments
