Participating students have a safe place to enhance their lives with fitness coaches and health experts. The results have been incredible. Participants get in shape and gain confidence while also improving their grades, attendance and behavior. 

Friendships are built and fears are overcome. At our j.k. livin after school programs, kids learn self-reliance and get a healthy start today, so they can make a better tomorrow.

**WHAT WE DO**
The just keep livin Foundation implements after school fitness and wellness programs in 40 inner city high schools. Our prescription is to prevent so we don’t have to cure later in life. We serve over 3000 students in 14 cities, providing them with a safe place to enhance their lives with fitness coaches and health experts.

**OUR PROGRAMS**
In keeping with the mindset and goals of j.k. livin, the foundation has set up fitness and wellness programs in TITLE 1 HIGH SCHOOLS where students might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about the body and mind connection.
The just keep livin program is powerful medicine that holds the capacity to change the course of a life. We operate in Title 1 schools, which have a large concentration of at-risk and low-income students. Dropout rates at these high schools are often as high as 50%, while 83% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch based on their families’ incomes and Federal Poverty Guidelines. Rates of child abuse and neglect are 5 times higher for children in families at this socio-economic level.

Though the students we work with come from highly disadvantaged backgrounds, science now affirms that you can use your knowledge and understanding to change the way you harness the power of your mind to create wellness, joy, and connection in your life.

The skills that students develop in jkl help them to create a better tomorrow and thrive throughout the rest of their lives. We cultivate a sense of community and provide a safe place to grow, combating isolation. Studies show that social interactions and emotional support help to decrease stress, anxiety and depression, while increasing calmness and happiness.

**OUR IMPACT**
We serve over 3000 students in 40 program sites in 14 cities throughout the United States. Our prescription is to prevent so we don’t have to cure later in life. Our program meets kids at a critical time and empowers them to make healthy choices for a better future; or, as JKL student, Yordis, puts it, “This is a program where kids can come to get away from their problems and have a chance in life that many do not get.” It’s powerful medicine that holds the capacity to change the course of a life.

Buckner Children & Family Services in Longview, Tx is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Buckner offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Longview area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their potential. **This profile highlights our Buckner Family Pathways program.** Buckner Family Pathways™ is designed to help single parents in crisis who need to care for their children and determine next steps for their family’s future.  Single-parent programs help single parents  overcome barriers that prevent self-sufficiency, such as education, career prospects and life skills. These barriers ultimately affect the potential for children to succeed at school and later in their adult lives.

Family Pathways is a short-term residential program with most residents staying for an average of 36 months, depending on length and requirement of degree plan.

Lacy is a single 25-year-old facing an unplanned pregnancy, unsure if she can parent her child. Mackenzie and Taylor have been in foster care for six years and are anxiously awaiting a forever family to adopt them. Doris and Peter are empy-nesters, looking for a life of community and meaning as they live out their retirement years.

Buckner offers a wide variety of services to children, families and single parents in the Longview area with the goal of building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life and fulfill their God-given potential.

When you volunteer with Buckner in Longview, you will meet people like Lacy, Mackenzie, Taylor, Doris and Peter. You will minister to them and pray with them. Their stories will leave an eternal impact on your soul. The Buckner ministry is unlike any other.

In Longview, we provide:

**Foster care and adoption**

Buckner provides the training and resources needed to become a family to a child for a season through foster care or a forever family through domestic foster care or adoption. Children in these programs are most often referred through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services due to experiencing abuse, neglect or abandonment. We also respond to mothers experiencing an unplanned pregnancy with counseling and support. Learn more by calling 903-757-9383.

**Buckner Family Hope Center® in Longview**

The Family Hope Center programs offer child-centered, family-focused places where families go to find hope, support and empowerment in their community to reach their fullest God-given potential. The key to the succes of the Family Hope Center is found in combining effective programs and passionate people to help families that are experiencing poverty, family issues and lack of services.

Our programs seek to engage through family assistance and community events; equip families through education, financial empowerment, child and youth development and spiritual development; elevate families through family coaching, counseling and spiritual enrichment.

**Buckner Family Pathways®**

We provide single-parent families the opportunity to live in a safe, secure environment while completing their educational or vocational goals and learning the skills they need to be self-sufficient. **HISTORY**
Communities in Schools national was established in 1977 (then called Cities in Schools). Today Communities in Schools is the nation’s leading community-based organization in dropout prevention. There are currently 25 states with Communities in Schools Programs. Texas is the largest program in the national Communities in Schools network.

The first Texas Communities in Schools program was established in 1979 in Houston.

Communities in Schools of East Texas, Inc.(a non-profit 501© 3) was founded in 1995 with the Deep East Texas program added in 1999.


**ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE**

**National Level:** Communities In Schools, Inc., (National Office) requires each state to follow an organizational structure that has proven to ensure successful state and local programs. The National Communities In Schools office has a board of directors. The National Office enters into written agreements with each state.

**State Level-** Legislative: Communities In Schools of Texas State Advisory Committee (CISSAC) was established by the legislature with nine members appointed by the Governor, Lt. Governor and Speaker of the House. The committee advises and provides guidance to the CIS State Office.

**State Level-** State Office: Communities In Schools of Texas, State Office is administered by the Texas Education Agency. The role of the State Office is to administer the Communities in Schools programs statewide according to legislation, program model, and National Communities in Schools Office requirements.

**Local Level:** 501c(3) Board of Directors: Each local Communities in Schools program must have a local Board of Directors. This board administers the Communities In Schools program at local levels through contracts with the state.

**School District and Campus Level:** Local Communities In Schools programs partner with school districts through written agreements to provide services to selected schools.
