Foundation: 1982
The Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County is a local, independent nonprofit committed to providing life-changing support to persons living with dementia and their caregivers. With a small staff, a determined board and wonderful volunteers we provide the only access to support, assistance and education that is available for families in our area struggling to cope with this disease.
We offer programs and services to individuals with any type of dementia, their families and the professionals who care for them.
We are proud to be a local, autonomous group, governed by a local Board of Directors. One-hundred percent of all donations received by our agency STAYS in Smith County and is used to provide programs and services locally.

Volunteering
Our volunteers can help us in numerous ways:
- Office Support: The Alliance staff is busy throughout the week with the necessary office work that keeps a nonprofit open and serving the community! Volunteers are always needed to help in the office with answering phones, filing, greeting clients, data entry, mailing, and supporting the staff with other administrative tasks.
- Project Lifesaver: Since more than 70% of people with dementia will wander, the Alliance partners with local law enforcement to deliver Project Lifesaver, a transmitter bracelet to help first responders locate a person with Alzheimer’s disease when they are reported missing. Volunteers can help to check equipment, change transmitter batteries monthly, prepare for trainings, follow up with clients, and ensure records are up-to-date.
- Day Club Friend: Our Day Club program is popular with both clients, who enjoy the company and activities with other participants and friends, as well as their caregivers, who get a much-needed break during the week. Volunteers in Day Club become a “friend” to participants and assist them with program activities and crafts. Ideally, this is a weekly or bi-weekly commitment. Volunteers are needed either Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. This is our biggest time commitment, but arguably the most fun!
- Event Volunteer: The Alliance is active throughout the community to educate people about the programs and services we provide. Event volunteers may work with the Alliance staff before or during the event. Community events include health fairs, expos, the Virtual Dementia Tour, professional development, outreach, and other agency initiatives throughout the year. Regular events hosted by the Alliance include the Caregiver Conference (May), Mah Jongg for Memory (February), Butterfly Hope Luncheon (September), Senior Day at the Fair (September) and the Senior Expo (October).
