You've accepted the gift and the challenge of taking a child with special needs into your home. Children who have been neglected, physically abused or sexually abused by people they trusted often don't know they're lovable and valuable. Many have trouble trusting others. The pain of past abuse or neglect can make it difficult for a child to adjust to being part of a healthy home. Problems caused by past traumas may surface many years after an adoption has occurred.

CENTERS FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES CAN PROVIDE YOUR FAMILY POST ADOPTION SUPPORT

CENTERS is the agency that coordinates services for families living in the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) Regions 1,2,4, 5,7,8,9, and 10. Families living out of state who adopted from DFPS also qualify for services. Designed to keep adopted families intact, our post adoption program focuses on building a strong family foundation.

TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY AND PROTECTIVE SERVICES (DFPS) has contracted to offer services to adopted children and their families to help them understand and cope with the effects of past abuse and manage the lifelong process of being adopted. Families may need assistance in dealing with handicaps, disabilities or developmental delays, or supportive services related to other issues.

Supporting Adoptive Families

Our Post Adoption Program comes to the aid of families that have accepted the responsibility of adopting a child that has previously been in the state’s foster care system. Many of these children have suffered abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment at the hands of their birth parents. It is the mission of our program to ensure that these families not only survive, but thrive with healthy, whole relationships. The staff in Post Adoption Services is trained and experienced in assessing needs and providing services to adoptive families. Services are provided at no cost for eligible clients.
